Vintage Design
After Thonet’s patent for making the bentwood furniture expired around the second half of 19th century, several companies started to make bentwood furniture themselves; The Ungvar Company being one of them. These companies including the Ungvar Company made pieces that were usually direct copies of Thonet furniture, or their own version of a classic – as in the case of this pair.
The Ungvar company became part of a Mundus group during the financial crisis at the beginning of the 20th century, and then was eventually bought by Thonet in the 1930s.
It is quite rare to find Ungvar furniture nowadays as they didn’t produced anywhere near the same quantity as Thonet or Kohn. This pair is to believed to be produced in the 1920’s and it’s design is inspired by some of Thonet chairs (mainly by chair no.8 and chair no.28) but their proportions and shapes have been slightly adjusted. Overall they have a very compact and elegant design; the circle being the main motive as seen on their seats, the supports underneath and the half circle of the backrests.
Both chairs are made of dark brown beech wood with a satin finish gloss finish.
Both chairs are in great vintage condition with some minimal wear and patina on the wooden surface gained over the years.
