Unique waxed cotton and leather “skirt” by John Galliano for Christian Dior Haute Couture.
The collection from which this “skirt” derives from was presented at Versailles. Guests were transported from the Ave. Montaigne store to Versailles on a perfect summer day via Dior Shuttles which felt like a fashion camping trip.
Upon arriving, guests (ourselves included) were ushered into one of the many massive mirrored halls with an mile long undulating podium covered in slick white laminate. Tiny french ballroom chairs were offered with plastic “cushions” filled with fluorescent liquid.
One had the sense that this particular Haute Couture collection (The Matrix) would be a radical departure and a turning point for the house of Christian Dior. and when the first looks exited, this proved to be true.
Here Galliano chose to eradicate all ties with historicism and romanticism which were present in important preceding shows such as the Opera Garnier and the Gare St. Lazare.
War paint, mohawks, harnesses and fluorescent accents were all present this “Future” themed collection. This collection seems especially influential over a decade later on the eve of the “Punk” Exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Waxed canvas is overlaid with a double leather harness “belt” with zippers, snaps and pockets galore. There is even an interior belt to harness to your left leg. Originally shown on an thin, shirtless Japanese boy with body paint, top knotted stringy black hair and biker boots.
Piece Unique. 1999-2000 France Haute Couture.
SERIOUS INQUIRIES ONLY.
