Shanghai in the 1930s was considered the Paris of the East. Here a European export frame has been partnered with an antique 19th Century golden metallic Chinese textile to create a chic bag made for the Asian market.
Not much remains from that era in Shanghai’s tumultuous history. This luxurious bag evokes the cosmopolitan atmosphere of elegant Shanghai which prevailed just before the war.
A silvered bronze frame is set with genuine malachite beads and plunger and is lined in a deep pumpkin silk. 1930s France x China.
Retailed by Jean Lindsay, Shanghai, a ladies specialty shop on Nanking Road. Made in France by E. Gauthier, 97 Ave des Petit Champs. Paris.
6.5″ x 7″, strap 11″
