An exhibition quality George IV break fronted sideboard, having oversailing top with stunning figured grain above a shallow frieze with original ormolu pateraes and pair of central glazed doors enclosing simulated rosewood interior with four height adjustable shelves, flanked by further glass door also enclosing simulated rosewood interior and height adjustable shelves, all fitted with original working locks and keys, original carved knobs with spring lock and decorated with brass mouldings, all with substantial fluted baluster columns with acanthus carved base capitals and gadroon style carvings to the top and base, all raised on breakfronted plinth base with gadroon shaped brass.
The quality and design of this cabinet leads us to believe, it is made by renowned English cabinetmaker Gillows of Lancaster and London.
The majority of their furniture was not stamped and this cabinet is not stamped either but we can see a similar example in ‘Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840’ , Susan E. Stewart book. Plate 459, page 384, as well as other distinctive features like: highest quality timber, simulated rosewood interior, spring lock knobs, flush shelf pins.
This antique bookcase / sideboard retains its original finish which has been cleaned, revived and waxed, the sideboard has been sympathetically restored and is in home ready condition.
The cabinet can be taken apart to enable transportation. C1820
